The early 1960s saw the introduction of the Federal Social Security Act in Germany. This provided
a new basis for working with the disabled and for the creation of social services.
In 1962 Gerhard Peters offered employment on an hourly basis for six disabled persons working
in sorting and cardboard box packaging in a building belonging to the Red Cross in Aurich. Soon
afterwards a larger complex was built, including workshops for weaving, rope-making, metalwork-
ing and carpentry.
This made it possible to offer additional jobs, resulting in the official founding of the Association
of Sheltered Workshops (WfbM) for disabled persons in Aurich-Wittmund. This organisation has
now been in existence for over 55 years. At ten different sites, including Schirum and Wiesmoor,
760 employees and 425 permanent staff perform work in the fields of electrical assembly, house-
keeping, gardening and landscaping, as well as support and administration. Other activities in-
volve a café and a self-service supermarket.
The focus here is on individual support and social engaged work for people with disabilities. This
above all depends on their needs, depending on the nature and severity of their disability. The
WfbM offers accommodation and a place of work to people who are mentally and/or physically
disabled or are suffering from mental illness.
